You know how much I love painting wreaths, so here are five ideas for a unique watercolor wreath!
The great news is that these ideas are only scratching the surface. You can arrange almost anything on a wreath! Start with this list, and expand on it with something else that catches your eye. Even I’m getting inspired for something new to paint!
Monochrome watercolor wreath
If you’re stuck on which colors to use, you can’t go wrong with a monochromatic color scheme. I love this Prussian Green color from LUKAS 1862 Watercolors because of the wide range of values I can get. The darkest values are so deep and rich, but still vibrant. And even the lightest values are airy but bright. Make sure to use a range of values in your wreath if you’re using just one color, so that your wreath has depth and visual interest.

Rainbow wreath
Another idea for a unique watercolor wreath – use rainbow colors! If you love painting florals like I do, AND you love colors, then why not use all the colors of the rainbow. You’ll notice that the color green is still the most prevalent but notice how I used both warm and cool greens. That will help bring overall color harmony to your painting. Give this a try, too!
Fruit/Veggie
Back in Fall 2021, I had an idea for a unique watercolor wreath – to arrange fruits and vegetables! These subjects are interesting because you can showcase them from different angles. You can also paint them when they’re sliced, or whole, or of different varieties.
Most of these were painted freehand and you can catch the real-time videos of me painting these on my YouTube channel.

Leaves
Leaves will always be one of my favorite things to paint. Whether they’re more of a looser style (below), or sketched first like the eucalyptus wreath above, it’s a good challenge to focus on values, and the act of painting rather than getting caught up on the end result.
Animal
My final idea for a unique watercolor wreath is to place a feature element in your wreath. Sometimes I get stuck on what the design of the wreath should be. If I didn’t want to do a floral element, then a great option is to use an animal! Birds fit in really nicely with wreaths. But other options might be a woodland animal, antlers, butterflies, etc.
What other ideas can you think of? What about geometric shapes? Or everyday items? Or ribbons? The possibilities are honestly endless! And the wreath shape is the best to keep things looking neat and tidy, but still creative and adventurous.
