I absolutely love the Monstera Deliciosa. Well, I don’t love how it’s toxic to pets, but it’s one of the most iconic and recognizable plants. Not to mention, it’s really easy to grow as a houseplant, too!
Today’s freebie includes a free tutorial on the easiest way to sketch this plant. I’ll give you a hint – think in shapes! If you were to expand the outline of this plant, what general shape do you see?
See it yet?
If you said, “A heart”, then you’re correct!
The best way to paint nature (or almost anything, really), is to think in shapes. Even when you look at a car, animal, or a person, try to blur the details and look for the overall shape.
From there, it’s easy to fill in the details because you have a shape to work with.
While this post isn’t watercolor-related, a lot of great paintings start with a sketch. So it’s still a good skill to learn. If you’re interested in getting started with watercolor, check out The Watercolor Garden! It’s got 10+ courses to help you be the best watercolor artist you can be.
