Step 1: Paint hearts in various colors and values; allow bleeds to happen
A huge advantage of watercolors is its transparency. So water down some of your paint for lighter values, or use less water and more paint for darker values. Play around with values, and let the paint even bleed into each other! Learn more about watercolor bleeds here or watch the video.
I chose a variety of colors but feel free to choose your own color scheme.
Got metallic colors? I love adding gold whenever I can!
Step 2: Let hearts dry and use colored pencils to add messages
Whenever you layer watercolors, always give time for the first layer to dry. Go grab a coffee, take a nap, or use a hair dryer to speed up the process.
I’m using my favorite colored pencils to write messages on my watercolor sweetheart candies. You can go with the typical phrases or make your own!
Step 3: Use colored pencils to outline some of the hearts
Finally, use coordinated colors to outline some of the hearts. I always like a bit of variety, so I left about half of the hearts unlined.
If you want them to look more 3-D, make the heart outline a bit shorter, then extend down the sides of the heart and connect in the middle.
What do you think? Happy Valentine’s Day and I hope the one you love appreciates your uniquely painted card!
